Ballymote Cinema (Protected Structure) Refurbishment

Kilcawley Construction have completed work on the major restoration & refurbishment of the 1947-built Art-Deco design cinema building in Ballymote, Co. Sligo. The restored building will be used as a modern cultural centre, with ambitious plans for a 3-D live link-up with Broadway shows in New York.

The works comprised of demolition of existing asbestos roof and internal fittings and finishes prior to any works commencing, including the decommissioning & strip-out of the M&E Services.

The refurbishment works comprised of a new roof, new external windows & doors, lift installation, new stage, new finishes throughout and new mechanical, electrical and sound system installations.  A complete fit-out package was also carried out including bar area, dressing rooms, seating and shop area.

As this 220-seat cultural centre & tourist attraction is housed in a listed Art-Deco structure, great care and planning was required to avoid any damage to original features.

This project was successfully delivered in a very confined town-centre site (100% coverage) and adjacent to two schools.  To overcome the difficulty this presented, Kilcawley Construction pro-actively dealt with all parties concerned throughout the construction programme to ensure that works were carried out safely and with minimal disruption to adjoining premises.  This necessitated the development and implementation of Traffic Management, Noise / Dust control plans and detailed method statements to minimise the impact on the surrounding buildings and occupants.
