Completed in May 2011, this project comprised of alterations and refurbishment of the disused old Garda Station located along the Mall, Ballyshannon, for conversion to use as the Regional Headquarters (276 sq m) for the Garda Traffic Corps. It will serve as the new HQ for the south and west Donegal Traffic Corps, which is at present based in Donegal town. The station is also set to be the new administration centre for traffic operations in the northern region, covering Donegal, Leitrim, Sligo, Cavan and Monaghan. The Ballyshannon base will also be a centre for regional and cross-border traffic conferences.
Works entailed partial demolition of the existing structures, replacement of windows & external doors, roof repairs, internal alterations to the building and site development works, including the provision of a new car-park to the rear of the building. As this site is used as the Headquarters for the Garda Traffic Corps, a high level of both Electronic & Physical security measures were provided along with high-specification Mechanical & Electrical Services.
This complex project was successfully delivered in a very confined town-centre site bordered by the ‘Mall’ (Street), Erne River and Residential units. To overcome the difficulty this presented, Kilcawley Construction pro-actively dealt with all parties concerned throughout the construction program to ensure that works were carried out safely and with minimal disruption to adjoining premises. This necessitated the development and implementation of Traffic Management, Noise / Dust control plans and detailed method statements to minimise the impact on the surrounding buildings and occupants.
