Kilcawley Construction successfully completed this €2M project at Mayo General Hospital in March 2011. As Main Contractor and Project Supervisor Construction Stage, our role included service coordination, management of all subcontractors, liaising with the relevant authorities and quality control. We were also responsible for the compilation and handover of Operation Maintenance Manuals and Health and Safety Files.
The project comprised of the construction of a new MRI Unit within the ‘live’ Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar, Co. Mayo. The completed facility provides Mayo with it’s own dedicated MRI Unit.
The works were carried out over 3 floors in a live hospital environment adjacent to Operating Theatre, Maternity Suite, Hospital Main Kitchen and Laundry Storage where a hygienic, sterile environment has to be maintained at all times.
As work was undertaken in a live hospital, nosocomial aspergillus was a concern, particularly during demolition. Kilcawley Construction worked closely with hospital infection control. To safeguard against nosocomial aspergillus we sealed a number of windows, installed a dust screen and also installed a temporary extractor system complete with hepa filters.
Before delivery of the MRI machine could take place, the electrical installation in the hospital had to be upgraded. This involved installation of a new distribution board and transformer. This work was carried out over two weekends with shut down to the mains supply. Generators were provided to maintain supply to the hospital at all times.
A contractor designed RF and magnetic enclosure for the MRI room was provided by a specialist subcontractor under our direct control and supervision. This was designed to the highest standard and future proofed for a possible 3.0T MRI machine in the future. The shielding and room finishes were prefabricated off-site in order to maintain quality and reduce programme duration.
In summary, the works included:
• Demolitions and strip out.
• Isolation of existing M & E services.
• Facade alteration.
• Structural support works to existing first floor slab to accommodate new MRI Unit.
• Removal of the hospitals existing transformer (Power to hospital maintained on temporary
generators).
• Main electrical board upgrade.
• RF Shielding and magnetic shielding design and installation.
• Installation of Siemens 1.5T MR machine.
• Reconfigure floor layout ground and first floor to accommodate new MRI Suite, New Offices,
Admission Area, Toilets and Changing Rooms.
• Wall, floor and ceiling finishes.
• All associated site works.
